What should you ask for when getting an option grant? Well, a company will often have a set of tiers for certain types of employees — and these tiers represent percentages of the amount of shares set aside for option grants (this is called the “option pool”).

Yes, the percentages can vary. But for a VC-funded company, the following provides a rough guideline:

Title Range
CEO 5-10%
CFO/COO 2-5%
Vice President 1-2%
Board Member 0.25%-1%
Lead Engineer 0.5% to 1%
Engineer (5+ years experience) 0.5%-1%
Junior Engineer 0.2%-0.5%
Manager 0.2%-05%
